Hot Shop Class vs. Flamework Class: What's the Difference?
Hot Shop Class:
- Location: Conducted in a "hot shop," a studio equipped with large furnaces and tools for working with molten glass.
- Process: Participants work with a crucible to gather molten glass from a furnace, then shape it using various tools and techniques on a blowpipe or punty rod.
- Scale: Typically involves creating larger items like vases, bowls, or paperweights.
- Heat Source: Large furnaces are used to keep the glass molten at high temperatures.
Flamework Class:
- Location: Held in a specialized area within the studio where a torch is used instead of a furnace.
- Process: Participants use a torch to melt and manipulate rods of glass, which are then shaped into smaller, intricate items.
- Scale: Generally focuses on creating smaller objects like beads, pendants, or small sculptures.
- Heat Source: A torch that produces a focused flame to melt the glass.
Both studios offer unique experiences in the art of glassmaking! Have fun!
